mom took home some $37 per week and dad was disabled.
there were no food stamps, no ssi.

i am inclined to feel that this classifies the views of a large percentage of atheists.

I don't know if this has been brought up before but it would be helpful to define what type of god we are talking about. Is it the Biblical god? Is it a Deist god who only created the universe but left it alone for life to evolve?
You can make absolutely sure that the biblical god either does not exist or if he exists that he is a pathetic writer and tyrant. That would be based on the contradictions and the moral turpitude of the Bible.
The Deist god is harder to "disprove" as he can be considered to be an over glorified scientist in a different universe experimenting with the creation of other universes.

And there are plenty of "intelligent" people who would believe in those ridiculous things. For example, Sir Conan Doyle, the author of the Sherlock Holmes detective series, literally believed in fairies and wrote a book trying to document their existence. That included photographs which were faked by two teenage girls using paper cutouts and photographed themselves with those cut outs. Why did he have such a belief? He was a Theosophist and it was one of their beliefs.

My mother had, in the 1960s, one of those spool audio recorders. It was a bit smaller than the one you show. She would tape radio shows of one of her friends.
In the 1970s I had a big, heavy cassette recorder that I would tape convention talks with. I remember having it in my lap in a special talk (1974 - 10,000 JWs in attendance) were Frederick Franz explained how the great tribulation/Armageddon would start within months or years - not decades - of September 1975. I forget what I did with that Cassette but if I still have it it would be a jewel.
I also remember, in the 1960s, seeing IBM computers that were the size of a huge refrigerator that used magnetic tape in spools. A modern day calculator has more capacity than one of those.
My first calculator (Texas Instruments), in the early 1970s, cost a hundred dollars (the equivalent of several hundred dollars in today's money) and could only add, subtract, multiply, divide and do X2.
My mother also had one of those vintage "portable" 1960s typewriters that used ink spools. I still have it.
